The reason for the widespread use of the PID algorithm is that it forms a reliable core for very robust control regulators and the tuning parameters are relatively easily understood. This accessibility makes PID control an attractive choice for engineers who need to implement effective control solutions without extensive theoretical analysis.
Understanding the Three Components
The proportional component responds to the current magnitude of the error. Increasing the proportional gain has the effect of proportionally increasing the control signal for the same level of error. The fact that the controller will “push” harder for a given level of error tends to cause the closed-loop system to react more quickly, but also to overshoot more. The proportional term provides immediate corrective action proportional to the error, but it cannot eliminate steady-state error on its own.
The integral component addresses steady-state error by accumulating the error over time. This accumulation ensures that even small persistent errors will eventually generate a control action large enough to eliminate them. However, the integral term can cause problems if not properly managed. When the integral term accumulates a large error over time, it can lead to an overshoot and sluggish response. This often happens if the actuator saturates (hits a maximum or minimum limit) or after a large setpoint change.

The primary challenge with derivative control is its sensitivity to measurement noise. A problem with the derivative term is that it amplifies higher frequency measurement or process noise that can cause large amounts of change in the output. It is often helpful to filter the measurements with a low-pass filter in order to remove higher-frequency noise components.

However, improper applications, lack of understanding and poor tuning of these controllers are often the main causes behind many commissioning problems. Practically all controllers can be run in two modes: manual or automatic. Furnaces typically involve heating and holding large amounts of raw material at high temperature. It’s commonplace for the material involved to have a large mass. As a result it possesses a high degree of inertia – the material’s temperature doesn’t change quickly even when high heat it applied. This characteristic results in a relatively steady PV signal, and it allows the Derivative term to effectively correct for Error without excessive changes to either the CO or the FCE.
pH control is another application where PID control is commonly used despite the challenges. pH is widely viewed in industry as a challenge to control. For one: pH is highly non-linear – its behavior changes from one operating range to another. Despite these challenges, the dynamics of pH are challenging from a control perspective, they are well suited for the PID form of the controller. Specifically, the dynamics of pH tend to be slow as the amount of caustic or acid that’s typically added to a process is relatively small when compared to the volume of existing liquid. The slower dynamics allow Derivative to improve control without overworking the FCE.
In many applications, engineers use simplified versions of PID control. You do not need to implement all three controllers (proportional, derivative, and integral) into a single system, if not necessary. For example, if a PI controller meets the given requirements, then you don’t need to implement a derivative controller on the system. Keep the controller as simple as possible. PI control (without the derivative term) is often sufficient for processes with slow dynamics or significant measurement noise.
State Feedback Control
