Understanding P&ID Data

Flow rate indicates the volume of fluid passing through the system per unit time, typically expressed in liters per second (L/s) or gallons per minute (GPM). Head data refers to the energy required to move the fluid, usually measured in meters or feet of fluid.
Calculating Pump Power
The power needed by a pump can be calculated using the following formula:
Power (kW) = (Flow rate × Head × Density × Gravity) / (Efficiency × 1000)
Where:
- Flow rate is in m³/s
- Head is in meters
- Density is in kg/m³ (for water, approximately 1000 kg/m³)
- Gravity is 9.81 m/s²
- Efficiency is the pump efficiency (decimal form, e.g., 0.75)
Applying the Data
To determine the pump power, convert flow and head data from the P&ID into the appropriate units. Insert these values into the formula along with the fluid’s density and pump efficiency. This calculation provides the minimum power requirement to operate the pump effectively.
