Starting current, also known as inrush current, is the initial surge of current drawn by an AC induction motor when it begins to operate. Knowing this value is important for selecting appropriate circuit protection and ensuring the electrical system can handle the load. Using a clamp meter or a specialized motor analyzer, you can measure the current during startup. Connect the instrument around one of the supply conductors and record the peak current when the motor starts. Ensure the measurement is taken during a typical startup to get an accurate reading.

Calculation Method

The starting current can be estimated using the motor’s rated current and a typical inrush factor. The formula is:

Starting Current = Rated Current × Inrush Factor

Where the inrush factor usually ranges from 5 to 7 times the rated current, depending on the motor type and load conditions. For example, a motor with a rated current of 10 A and an inrush factor of 6 will have an estimated starting current of 60 A.
