What Is NPSH?

NPSH stands for Net Positive Suction Head. It is the difference between the absolute pressure at the pump’s suction and the vapor pressure of the fluid, expressed in meters or feet. Proper NPSH ensures that the fluid remains in a liquid state and does not vaporize during pump operation.

Importance of NPSH in Pump Performance

If the available NPSH is too low, cavitation can occur. Cavitation causes noise, vibration, and damage to the impeller and other pump components. Ensuring sufficient NPSH improves pump longevity and maintains efficiency.

How to Calculate NPSH

The NPSH required (NPSHr) is provided by the pump manufacturer. To determine the available NPSH (NPSHa), use the following formula:

NPSHa = (Ha – Hp) + (Hv – Hs) – Hf

Where:

  • Ha = Absolute pressure head at the fluid surface
  • Hp = Vapor pressure head of the fluid
  • Hv = Velocity head of the fluid
  • Hs = Static head difference
  • Hf = Friction losses in the suction pipe
